Image Capture Software

Systems that control, Cameras, Mounts and all sorts of other devices, Manage the the complete process of image capture

NINA

Nighttime Imaging ‘N’ Astronomy controls all your stuff and does so much more. It controls cameras, mounts, focusers, guiders, rotators, domes, switches. It has processes that allow you to automatically coordinate all these toys and run an entire imaging session automatically. It also contains helper processes for Polar Alignment, Plate Solving, focusing and calibration frames. NINA deals mainly with multiple image capture, not video. It is windows based and free, but a contribution is requested.

Sharpcap

A powerful astronomy camera capture tool. It covers similar functions to NINA but specialises in video and has strong features like live stacking, that make it particularly suitable for Planetary, Lunar, Solar, Deep Sky and EAA (Electronically Assisted Astronomy). Windows software, basic version free, pro is extra.

Firecapture

Designed specifically for planetary video imaging. Will also control mounts and other devices. Windows & Linux freeware.

Indi/Ekos – Stellermate – Astroberry

An advanced cross-platform observatory control and automation tool for Astrophotography. It includes highly accurate GOTOs using astrometry solver, ability to measure and correct polar alignment errors , auto-focus & auto-guide capabilities, and capture of single or stack of images with filter wheel support. Ekos is shipped with KStars a fully integrated planetarium system.

Ekos is the frontend GUI astrophotography tool .It performs capture, focusing, guiding, and scheduling. Ekos depends on INDI for device control. INDI is the backend server used to communicate with and control astronomical devices. While distributed elements run on windows, Indy/Ekos is effectively a Linux system. It can be run on an inexpensive Raspberry PI. Stellarmate & Astroberry are packaged versions of Indi/EKos for Raspberry PI that make it easy to install.

AstroPhotography Tool (APT)

Apt says on its website that ” it is like Swiss army knife for your astro imaging sessions. No matter what you are imaging with – Canon EOS, Nikon, CCD or CMOS astro camera, APT has the right tool for planning, collimating, aligning, focusing, framing, controlling/tethering, imaging, synchronizing, scheduling, meridian flipping, analyzing and monitoring. It runs on Windows and is very modestly priced.

BackyardEOS

“Software tailor made to control your Canon DSLR camera. It is purposely built with astro-photography in mind” There is also a Nikon option. A good proven alternative if you only want to use a Canon or Nikon camera. Windows, paid for.

PHD2

The absolute standard in telescope guiding. It is used by all the above packages but must be downloaded seperatly. Free: Windows, Linux, Mac.

Telescope mount guiding software that simplifies the process of tracking a guide star, letting you concentrate on other aspects of deep-sky imaging or spectroscopy.
